I have a somewhat older Canon digital camera and I want use it under water, any recommendations on getting started?

I have an older Sony camera (3.1 megapixel) with the Sony housing.  For basic underwater shots I get decent results if using it in shallower water on days with good sunlight penetration.  Using the camera's built in flash gets poor results so I turn the flash off.  Then touch up the photos with software like PhotoShop etc.
