Very Good Young Joe, indeed your correct. I think that was the trek with a FULL boat. You, your gal, Molly, Doug, Steve, Dave, and me, the 5 guys all with two tanks, the Impulse was pretty sluggish in the water, glad we were in the mines and not Superior.        T

Heres a pic of you Joe from last season, it wont be long now.

A couple days ago I received the key that will open the door to success: 36" bar for the Husky. I spent the day making a scabbard for it from some scrap oak. The matching chain is on back order so I will need to use the 20" bar for a while. Here are some photos of the saw with the 20" next to the new one.

WOW! John, thats some fine woodwork, had I known you were milling that out I'd have had you make a second,  then I'd use the "second" on my saw. I'm sure we could of worked something out  Wink                                                TRINITY

Terry,

Interesting post you have going.  It sure looks like you created a flurry of ice diving activity for this winter.  Good Job!  Everyone that's an ice diver is going to be scouring the lake bottoms for anchors.  It's about time someone else steps up to the plate to give me some competition on my ice diving adventures.  My ice diving adventures are just for fun, especially afterwords, LOL.  Although I too should introduce a challenge for all my ice diving adventurers this year.  How about the coolest piece of junk or garbage including cool bottles normally found on the bottom of any Lake I perform ice dives at, including Lake Minnetonka.   Rules are simple, the garbage or piece of junk will need to fit through the hole and I am the judge.  Removing any garbage or junk from the lakes is always a good thing!

The prizes include, a gift certificate to your favorite Dive shop and four free tickets (or two couples) to the new UMSAT Show this year. (Saturday, February 26 2011)  (Can't Ice Dive that weekend or one will miss out).  Also, the winner will have an opportunity for five minutes of fame by video taping the person in an interview format and put up on this site.  (Only if approved by the winner after editing).

This year we are sleeping out in the heated houses for the weekend. (8x16).  Hopefully we will have the time to collect quite allot of junk to judge??   Houses can be relocated each day if we want.  Contest ends at end of season, which is what I consider the last dive of the year and will be much sooner than ice out.

Details and time will follow.

Good luck on your amazing anchor challenge.  Looks like you are going to have allot of fun with it!  it keeps most of us die hard divers going though out the winter.

Terry, You want a wood cover I can make that happen. John's is real nice but I can match that.

Re: TRINITY'S 1st Annual 2010/2011 Icing/ Anchoring Challenge - Terry - 11-28-2010

Oh, now theres a challenge! Matching the quality of that "scrap" oak John put together. That looks like some pretty fine workmanship, dude. My bars just a bit shorter then John's big 36" at only 32", but I bet my engines bigger. Curious what model that Husky of yours is John?
There might be another challenge! To open identical holes 100 Yds apart,  corner drill holes pre-cut, probably by Young Joe (Hydro). First to have the entire block free - floating in the hole wins, what do you say John? I can feel my forearms aching on that 3rd cut already. I'll want my Viking on for that one, to cut all the way thru with a chainsaw, rather then finish the last inch or two, with a hand saw, especially under the gun, going to bring up enough water to dive above the ice!
Phil, my friend, good to see you join in. I'll respond more to your post later tonight, need to load my gear and go fine a little open water, have some big magnets, one for each hand, to help in the super poor vis. I wanted to test out.        TRINITY

Heres a couple pics from last year, while Steve and I bask in the glory, Dave and Young Joe wonder what happened,,,,,,

Thanks for the comments on the wood bar cover.
I have 3 Husqvarnas actually. Two are the 272 XP, and one is the model 61. The 272 XPs are 4.9 HP and they kinda gyroscope in your hands when you wind them up. The 36" bar should offset the gyroscoping some, but when the chain is traveling at 68' per second, somethings gotta give. Here are the specs on the 272:

I might have to pass on the hole cutting challenge as I don't have much experience cutting holes (yet). I have cut a few, but my great buddies Art and Nate have been cutting them mostly. It is all about efficiency though whether it is finding the right location, cutting the hole, removing the ice, setting up the shelter, rotating in and out the divers, minimizing overlap on search areas, maximizing bottom time, taking down the shelter, and securing the hole at the end. Time is a valuable commodity to all of us. My biggest struggle with this winters game is going to be balancing dive time with family time. Anything I do to increase efficiency diving will make that less of an issue.

Thats some good thinkin there...  :Smile One magnet in each hand would offset the magnetic variation of the North and South poles shifting at a rate of .5 degrees every 3 years. The needle of your compass would point to... which ever hands closer. Just messing with you on the polar shift thing...

Steve and I went out and hit Prior Lake today, So. of the cities. Pretty unique with ice 1 1/4" thru maybe 1 1/2" think clear. It would support you walking but cracked with every step, but wouldn't support you fully suited up. I busted a hole with Steves steel 72 pony and went in, but to get to the hole had to crawl pushing my tank and BC in front of me. We went out 200' vis was ok but not great. Fun to screw around on, and to see if you could come up thru, if your feet are planted on the bottom, by pushing your tank (on your back) up, the ice  can be busted a bit at a time, but just barely. Dont think you could do two inches of solid clear, you can kind of feel a vacuum as you start to lift. Heres a few pics.

STEVE! theres nothing on the lens!

"maybe 1 1/2" think clear." There was no clear thinking. Wink
