Thanks. Looks like conversion to HID would be about an additional $230 (bulb, socket, ballast), plus misc. U/W housing parts for ballast. That would be about $330-350 total for an 18W HID. Not bad.
I need to test this light - bulbs only $5 - to learn a bit more. Now that I've found parts sources, worked out design detail, next light will be easier. If this light is problem free, I'll have the confidence to spend for and take on the HID.
I was surprised that I could do this light with basic tools - drill, Dremel, etc - except for needing a lathe to make minor mods to the flashlight used for the lighthead body.

I think we need to get several people together with some tools to make more of these lights. I'm anxious to hear how the tests go. This is a worthwhile DIY project.
