Re: 2008 Ice-out Poll
Looks like Wazee will probably be the first to have ice-out.  There is an update from yesterday on the conditions at this link from our wiscuba site.

Re: 2008 Ice-out Poll
I've been reading around about ice and as it turns out that snow may not be all bad. As it turns out, heavy snow will press and deform the ice forcing water up through the cracks. This is why lakes get slush layers early in the year if it snows heavy right after the ice forms up.

I would guess the heavy runoff will erode the shore badly and the weight will cause the remaining sheet to break up.

Let me know it that happends? Smile

That Wazee conditions update was encouraging. Let me know if you hear anything else!

Re: 2008 Ice-out Poll
Walked around Lake Phalan today.  Still about 95% ice covered, with 30-50' of open water need most shoreline.

Square and Perch usually lag Phalan by about a week.  Looks like my estimate of this weekend for ice out was optimistic.

I hope Wazee keeps on it's current path.  I need to get in the water on April 26/27.  I decided I needed more quite time when diving, and will be starting my Inspiration training that weekend.  Big Grin

Re: 2008 Ice-out Poll
Not that it is anything official, but I am personally declaring ice out in my neck of the woods. I have a good sized pond behind my house (complete with fish, stocked by the DNR) that is completely free of ice as of today. The egrets, blue herons and ducks are back and enjoying the open water. Unfortunately that does not translate to the local lakes, which are a bit behind. The ice is fading, but it still has a ways to go. The weather this week should help.

And a few more as of 4-16...

Everything in the 'South' category is out or partial.  A few partials in East Central. Won't be long now!

Moore Lake in "Friendly Fridley" is ice free as of 4-15-08. I didn't get the chance to make trips by any other lakes the last couple days.
