Detroit Lakes Diving
Courtesy of Gary Thompson at Tri-State Diving, here is an overview of diving in the Detroit Lakes area.

--------------------------------------------------------

Jason we have some very good diving in the Detroit Lakes (DL) area. DL has 412 lakes within a 20 mile radius and we have some lakes with very good vis. as well as lakes that have less than 2 feet. We can normally count on at least two to three lakes with at least 25+ vis. at any given time.

There are many artifacts to look for including items from the
days when they harvested ice and items from the logging era. Big Detroit Lake has the artifacts from the ice harvest days as it had two commercial operations on the northeast side of the lake where the Holiday Inn now sits. Big Elbow Lake in the northern part of the county as well as the lakes downstream on the Ottertail River to Frazee where the saw mill was host logging artifacts from the turn of the century.

Lakes known for their vis. include Bad Medicine, Boot Lake, and Hoot Owl Lake in the northern part of the county. Long Lake, Pickeral Lake and Meadow Lake close to DL and Lake Seven, Six and Paul Lake in northern Ottertail County. A number of lakes in the area have Bison bones and skulls including some that are of the Prehistoric Bison which
date back to 13,000 years ago. We have also found Elk skulls with big racks that shows there must have been Elk herds in the area at sometime in the past. Some of our lakes are deep with depths at 100 foot plus and these are usually the lakes that have the best vis.

That sounds great. I'd like to make a trip up there sometime.
