S.S. Meteor Project April 24 & 25
The S.S. Meteor Project is the last weekend in April every year.  This year it is Saturday and Sunday April 24 & 25 2010 in Superior Wisconsin on Barkers Island.  (This is across the Bong Bridge, over the Duluth Harbor heading east to Superior).  Every year the GLSPS, LSMMA, SPM and WUAA, gather together with volunteers (roughly 50 to 65) for an “ALL HANDS ON DECK” to help with the Preservation of the only Whaleback Ship left that sailed the Great Lakes Region.  It's the only Whaleback Ship in existence in the WORLD today!

The S.S. Meteor is getting very old and is still a very valuable piece of Historical History, it's very important to keep the ship in "Ship Shape".  For the last five years, the GLSPS, LSMMA, and SPM have continued to sponsor a Preservation Project on the S.S. Meteor for the Superior Public Museums.

The tasks performed by the volunteers on past Projects were:

1- Scraping and painting (with respirators) rooms that need a new coat of paint.
2- House Cleaning
3- Cleaning out the forward hold
4- Demolition of the inside rest rooms
5- Rebuilding of the Chart Room and main door
6- Scraped and painted upper engine room
7- Re-painted S.S. Meteor Sign
8- Pressure washed outside of ship from bird droppings and much accumulated debris
9- Repainted many of the Crews Quarters Rooms and floors
10- Repaired the Main Whistle of the Meteor

*There are many more tasks that were completed but too many to list here.

This year we have another large list of new tasks to complete and a few old tasks that needed more attention and need to be done every year.

If you are interested in this very worthy Preservation Project, please contact Phil Kerber at, pkerber@glsps.org.

If lodging is needed, it’s based on a first come first served.  We only have space for twenty (20) people that would prefer free lodging.  We have supporters up in the areas that donate space in their homes, Travel Camper Trailers and Boats.  They are all heated and very comfortable, but cozy.  There are many different Motels to choose from as well.  (Google “Superior WI Motels” to find one of your choice).
SPM and LSMMA supply free lunch for all participants and volunteers.

Please sign up early and come join us for this very worthy cause.  You do not need to be a diver to volunteer.  The only limit is that you are a member of one of these organizations.  GLSPS, LSMMA, SPM or WUAA.  (Kids under 12 are not able to help because of insurance reasons).  Sorry.

Those of you that sign up will be receiving an announcement on more details about the Project.

Hope to see you there.

Phil Kerber
S.S. Meteor Project Chairman
