Now that we have a split decision on what it is. I'm holding on to torque converter because I've seen thousands of mechanical things and nothing else looks like a converter. I'll agree the top plate looks integrated and something about that big toothed cap/nut below the ring reminds me of something I know but can't place it.

Take it apart, don't cost nothing.
