Snake River "clean up" Dive 9-23-12
HBDT scoured the bottom of the Snake river yesterday in Pine City doing its part to keep the underwater world clean and trash free  ;D. We had visability ranging from 3' to 3"  :o. Its a good thing the water was warm enough to go without gloves so we could feel the treasure! I will post some pictures when I get them cleaned up  :-X

Re: Snake River "clean up" Dive Yesterday
Viz was tight with little or no current to help clear the silt. HID lights were used but were un-effective in the turbid water. I was gonna dive wet but with air temps at 35 degrees in the morning I went dry instead. The water temp was 54 degrees no weeds below 3' The bottom was mostly sandy gravel under the 6" to 12" of loon crap. Quite a bit of debris in spots with some of the debris raising my eyebrows more than once. Some of the items didn't look like anything (as we couldn't see anything) but certainly felt like a carcass (hopefully just a critter). Fun dives though.

The best way to clean them is soak them in toilet bowl and water mix. After a couple days scrub them. Then mix 50% muratic acid 50% water gets the rest. CAUTION  wear protective gear and do outside!

The green one has a concave bottom. When I felt it, I thought it was some type of light fixture

Here are a couple links I found to help identify the bottles. " The rule I always use is if the seam goes all the way up and over then it was made after 1900's could be late 1890's though. The green one is made by Owens Illinios Glass company. (champagne or wine)"

We found a bunch of coke bottles, 7up, and a really cool  bubble shaped one from the Cambridge Bottling Co

I have a couple others soaking and will get pics posted later......

Re: Snake River "clean up" Dive 9-23-12
My 22 rifle and I did no favors to bottle collectors when I was young.  We had a dump pit out behind the barn that was probably started in the late 1800's and I had a couple of long 2x's that I used to set all the bottles I could find on.  I spent a lot of time at the pit.  Bottles got harder and harder to find.. but easier and easier to shatter.
Cold and dark down there huh?

+ 1  ;D. They were so much more fun than "cans". Once I graduated to live targets of striped pocket gophers in southern MN, then prairie dogs out west, the bottle population came off the endangered species list  ;D
