Re:Steel tanks
Okay, what are the "best" steel tanks to get for local diving assuming that you will only use them as singles for awhile, but plan to double them in the future? I know that the term "best" is subjective. But if I walked into a LDS what steel tank should I request?

Re:Steel tanks
Jason,

it depends on whether you're a "sinker" or a "floater", whether you have an AL or SS backplate (see post below) - this will decide whether you're choice is going to be Faber or PST.

Stay away from the 95's - although they make a great single tank, most people have a very hard time staying horizontal with them in a doubles configuration. They tend to push you head forward if in a horizontal position, or you need to dive in a somewhat vertical position, which is the worst posture ever anyway.

You might want to try out a set of PST's and compare 'em to a set of Fabers and see what works best for you.

Re:Steel tanks
OK..really quick question...
(bp = backplate)
Steel bp's are 6 lbs right? Is an aluminum bp 3 -or- 4 lbs?

Re:Steel tanks
Steels are something like 5# or 6# negative. That takes in most of the plates that are being sold. I think they are approx 3/16" thick. There are also some available that are heavier. An Al plate is more like 1# to 2# negative with the same thickness.

Re:Steel tanks
DRE,

I will be using a steel backplate (6#). I use about 20-22# with a full 7mil suit. But, I am planning on switching to a dry suit this spring.

Which PST and which Faber should I try? And, where can I go to rent both?

Re:Steel tanks
A couple people have noted that some messages are missing from this thread. I'm not sure why that is the case. I'll look into it.

Re:Steel tanks
Yes, I have noticed this as well. It seems a bit odd because the replies to the missing posts are still here. :-\
